How Drop-Off Works in Pinellas County

Pinellas County runs household chemical drop-off for every household in the county, whichever city you live in. The permanent Household Hazardous Waste Center sits next to the Solid Waste Disposal Complex in St. Petersburg; HHW North, behind the County Government Center on U.S. 19 in Clearwater, opens on select Saturdays. Bring a government-issued ID — staff scan it to confirm you live in the county. Businesses, hobbyists, haulers and nonprofits are sent to the county's separate business collection events instead.

The HHW sites take automotive fluids and fuel, paint and solvents, lawn, garden and pool chemicals, mercury thermometers and fluorescent bulbs, marine and road flares, and nearly every battery type except vehicle batteries. Quantities are capped per vehicle per day, and commercial-grade material is turned away. Plug-in electronics, appliances, fire extinguishers, propane tanks over one pound, medicine and sharps are not accepted.

Bulk junk, yard waste and recycling are run by each city, not the county. St. Petersburg operates five brush and recycling sites for properties on its sanitation service; Largo runs recycling centers on Starkey Road and at Tri-City Plaza. Everything else — garbage loads, tires — can go to the county's Solid Waste Disposal Complex, which charges a disposal fee.
