Florida has no statewide mattress recycling law
A handful of states — California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon among them — run statewide mattress recycling programs funded by a fee at purchase, which guarantees residents a free drop-off point. Florida has no equivalent.
The practical consequence: there is no guaranteed free mattress drop-off here, and every municipality sets its own rules through its curbside bulk program.
Why landfills and curbside programs resist them
Mattresses are difficult to compact and can wrap around or damage landfill and transfer station equipment, which is why many facilities restrict or surcharge them.
It is a genuine shame from a materials standpoint — the large majority of a mattress (steel springs, foam, fiber, and wood) is recyclable, but only at a specialized facility that can break it down. Those are not evenly distributed, which is exactly the gap a statewide program would fill.
Wrap it before it goes out
Many South Florida municipalities require mattresses to be wrapped in plastic before curbside collection, and crews can refuse an unwrapped one. Beyond compliance, it is simply good practice — it keeps the mattress dry if it sits through a rainstorm and contains anything living in it.
If you are disposing of a mattress because of bed bugs, wrapping is not optional — seal it before it leaves the bedroom, not at the curb.
How it works in each county
Miami-Dade: a mattress counts toward your bulky waste pickup, and eligible residents can take it to a Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Center.
Broward: entirely dependent on your city's bulk program — check your municipality's schedule and volume cap.
Palm Beach: bulk furniture collection generally runs through your city or hauler rather than the SWA, which focuses on chemicals, electronics, and recycling.
When to just have it hauled
Mattress removal is included in our minimum load tier, $99 to $149, which covers labor, the truck, and disposal. That is worth it mainly when you cannot wait for the next bulk window, when you have no way to transport it, when it is coming down a flight of stairs, or when it is a king set where the mattress, box spring, and frame together are well past what one person should be wrestling with.
